Inline Visualizations in SharePoint
March 23, 2010 - 1:00pm EST
From a SharePoint End User's perspective, it's hard trying to figure out the best ways to expose information through graphics in SharePoint. SharePoint lists didn't offer color coding and other visualization effects. Sure, you can use Excel Services and KPIs if you've spent the big bucks for the Enterprise version to do a little graphic enhancement, but what about those of us who still need more complex visualization capabilities?
Workshop Overview
HTML Calculated Columns to the rescue! Christophe Humbert from Path to SharePoint has been working for over a year on solutions that can be implemented at the site level using the calculated column along with the Content Editor Web Part.
Inline Visualizations in SharePoint will give you the keys to mastering an out of the box method for creating visual effects in SharePoint. No need to be a SharePoint expert. No need for SharePoint Designer or server side tools, all is done using the OOTB features.
Examples showcased in this workshop include:
- Traffic lights for issues lists
- Progress bars for tasks lists
- Color coding (text or background) by category
- Text effects (bold, scroll)
The technique presented in this workshop apply to both SharePoint 2003 and SharePoint 2007.

Inline Visualizations in SharePoint is an entry level workshop for SharePoint Site Administrators and Power Users interested in creating graphic effects to enhance their SharePoint sites. No experience is required other than the desire to implement the solutions in your own production environement once the workshop is completed.
This is the first workshop in a three part series on using Charts and Graphs in SharePoint. You do not have to take the other workshop in order to take this one... they are all stand-alone solutions.
Who is this for?
This workshop is aimed at Site Administrators and Power Users looking for techniques to add additional functionality to their SharePoint pages without having access to the SharePoint server. All solutions can be implemented with Site Manager level permissions in the SharePoint 2003 and 2007 environments.
SharePoint Gantt Chart Enhancements
March 24, 2010 - 1:00pm EST
One of the most useful views Project Managers can have is that of a Gantt Chart view, usually associated with Microsoft Project. The implementation of Gantt Charts in SharePoint, however, leaves "a lot to be desired", to put it politely.
Christophe Humbert is working on an extended solutions to Gantt Chart views in SharePoint, not only to make the more visually appealing, but to make them more useful by adding expanding and contracting timelines, the use of the grouping function and color coding items for more clarity when view the chart.
You won't have to purchase any third party web parts to implement these solutions. Everything will be available out of the box or available for free as part of the resources for the workshop.

Workshop Overview
The limitations for displaying charts and graphs in a WSS site can be daunting. At least in MOSS, there are Excel Services available. In this live online, hands-on workshop, we will go over various solutions for providing dynamically generated charts and graphs in a WSS implementation.
The data used to drive the charts will come from SharePoint lists, libraries, RSS feeds and web services. Don't store your charts and graphs in Excel where noone can see them... expose them in the web browser through SharePoint!
